Itinerary
A week of discovering the diversity of winter
Snow-covered mountain villages, wintry landscapes and culinary adventures.
The Jungfrau Region is an experience for all the senses and is also worth a visit in winter for non-skiers.
Discover the diversity of winter in the Jungfrau Region on this 7-day tour.
Day 1: The highest railway station in Europe and winter magic in a mountain village
The first day starts with a highlight. The journey begins in Grindelwald, more precisely in the terminal where the Eiger Express takes you to the Eiger Glacier station. The journey continues on the Jungfrau Railway - a construction of the century. The route leads through a seven-kilometre tunnel through the Eiger and Mönch to the Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe. At 3545 metres above sea level, the terminus is the highest railway station in Europe.
Here you can visit the Ice Palace, enjoy a fantastic view of the Aletsch Glacier or discover the Snow Fun Park. Before you leave the Jungfraujoch behind you, you can stop for a bite to eat in one of the restaurants or buy a souvenir from one of the shops.
On the way back, take the train from the Eiger Glacier via Kleine Scheidegg to Wengen. In the village at the foot of the Jungfrau, you can enjoy a winter walk and the impressive view of the Lauterbrunnen Valley before rounding off the day with an original dinner. We recommend a convivial evening in the Hotel Braunbär's Grillkota - a barbecue hut with a cosy fireplace and the ideal place for an evening of raclette or fondue.
Day 2: Winter hiking and an invention from Grindelwald
Today the journey continues in Wengen. The aerial cableway takes you up to Männlichen in just a few minutes, where snow-covered landscapes await you. Here you are already in the centre of the ski area, but the winter landscape can also be explored on foot instead of on two skis.
The Jungfrau Ski Region offers many well-maintained winter hiking trails, which are also suitable for families. The hike from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg leads through the Arvengarten with its magnificent mountain pines. It ends with a short ascent to Kleine Scheidegg. After around two and a half hours, you will have reached your destination and can enjoy refreshments in the mountain restaurant.
The day continues at a fast pace - with a toboggan ride in the afternoon. Instead of an ordinary sledge, however, you master the descent with a Velogemel. A Velo - what? A Velogemel is a wooden snow bike that was used as a means of transport in Grindelwald over 100 years ago. Today it is used as a piece of sports equipment, so you can make your way back to Wengen or even to the other side to Grindelwald on a Velogemel.
The Velogemel can be conveniently hired from Wyss Sport on Kleine Scheidegg and returned at Wengen or Grindelwald railway station.
Day 3: Excursion to the capital and a lake cruise
The Jungfrau Region has a lot to offer and, thanks to its ideal location, can also be combined with a visit to the capital of Switzerland. You can easily travel to Bern from almost anywhere in the Jungfrau Region within only 1.5 hours by public transport.
The charming capital with its medieval flair invites you to linger even in winter. Whether it’s sightseeing, shopping or visiting a museum, the city has something to offer for everyone. The most popular sights include the federal building, Bern's Old Town and the ‘Zytglogge’ (the clock tower).
You can take the train from Bern back to the Jungfrau Region with just one change in Interlaken. However, you can also get off in Thun and combine your excursion with a cruise on the lake. The boats on Lake Thun also operate in winter, so you can enjoy a tranquil cruise through the wintry landscape. The boat will take you to Interlaken Ost, where you can easily change back to the train and arrive back in the Jungfrau Region in the evening.
Day 4: A day dedicated to James Bond
The third day is all about James Bond. In just a few minutes, the cable car will take you from Mürren to the Schilthorn - at 2970 metres above sea level. The Schilthorn was the filming location for the 1969 James Bond classic ‘On Her Majesty's Secret Service’. Today's 360-degree restaurant served as the base for the villain Blofeld and was given the name Piz Gloria - which it still bears today.
Here you can enjoy a sumptuous brunch - and the view of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. A visit to the viewing platform and Spy World - an interactive exhibition where you can immerse yourself in the filming of the movie - are also a must.
On the way back, you should definitely make a stop at Birg to enjoy the view from the Thrill Walk or the Skyline Walk.
A leisurely winter stroll through the car-free village of Mürren is the perfect end to an eventful day.
Day 5: A leisurely winter hike and plenty of action
Today also starts in Grindelwald, but on the other side of the village. From here, the gondola takes you up to First in just under half an hour. Grindelwald First is the starting point for the leisurely and varied winter hike to Bachalpsee.
A short ascent is followed by a gentle up and down until you finally reach Bachalpsee after about an hour. After a short break to linger and enjoy the view, the same route leads back up to First.
After lunch at the First mountain inn, the Cliff Walk awaits you - a viewing platform that juts out 45 metres into the void. Pure thrills!
But there's even more adrenaline waiting for you: with the ‘First Flyer’, you'll hurtle down the 800-metre-long steel cable from First to Schreckfeld, perfectly secured in a sturdy harness.
From Schreckfeld, the ‘First Glider’ takes you on its journey. Four people at a time can first be pulled backwards up to First on their stomachs in the ‘First Glider’ and then fly back down again at speeds of up to 83 km/h.
From Schreckfeld station, the First cable car takes you back to Grindelwald, where you can round off the day in comfort.
Day 6: Relaxation in the afternoon and speedy descents in the evening
Today starts with relaxation. Many hotels in the Jungfrau Region offer their own spa area where you can recover from the exciting past days.
Otherwise, we recommend a visit to the Alpine Sports Centre Mürren - a meeting place for everyone who wants to have a good time. The Alpine Spa is an oasis of well-being that appeals to all the senses.
Relax in the sauna, steam bath, relaxation room or whirlpool - the Alpine Spa at the Mürren Sports Centre leaves nothing to be desired. A feel-good massage rounds off your visit.
In the evening, you're ready for action, because a fast-paced toboggan run awaits you - at night. The Wengernalp Railway takes you from Grindelwald to Alpiglen, where the adventure begins. The night-time tobogganing fun on the floodlit run is an experience that no one should miss. The Brandegg restaurant, which is open longer during night sledging, provides refreshments in between.
The railway then takes you back from Brandegg to Grindelwald.
Day 7: Snow-covered landscapes and spectacular views in the Haslital
The last day starts in Meiringen, where the cable car takes you to Hasliberg Reuti and the gondola on to Mägisalp. The snowshoe route to Bidmi starts there. The trail is signposted with pink posts and leads through snow-covered forests past a small barbecue area and an alpine hut. A wonderful and easy snowshoe trail on the edge of the Meiringen-Hasliberg ski area.
Don't have the right equipment? No problem. Snowshoes and walking poles can be conveniently hired from sports shops in Meiringen or Hasliberg.
After just under 4 kilometres and around 1.5 hours, you will arrive in Bidmi, where you can warm up and enjoy a bite to eat in the family restaurant.
Before heading back to Meiringen, take the gondola lift up to the terminus. At the Alpen tower, 2,250 metres above sea level, you can enjoy a spectacular 360-degree view far beyond the Bernese Oberland and Central Swiss Alps. The impressive panorama invites you to linger. The charming Tower Bar in the Alpen tower panorama restaurant offers the best place to marvel at the 401 mountain peaks and invites you to linger. The gondola lift then takes you back to Meiringen.
