Three Days Family Trip

The children play in Muggestutz's house.
Itinerary

An adventure playground, a dwarf called Muggestutz and a sweet temptation

Follow on the trail of Muggestutz, the oldest Hasli dwarf. Take a boat trip on the turquoise waters of Brienzersee – and a funicular to an adventure playground. Visit a gorge – and make your own dessert. There's something for the whole family on this three-day tour.

Day 1: Hike the Dwarf Trail

Your first day begins at the Alpbach bottom station of the Bergbahnen Meiringen-Hasliberg. It takes around 30 minutes to travel, first, by aerial cableway to Hasliberg-Reuti and then, by gondola cableway on to the Mägisalp. Here, a wonderful mountain panorama awaits. As does Muggestutz, the oldest Hasli dwarf, who lives up here. The easy Mägisalp – Bidmi Dwarf Trail takes around two hours and is full of adventure. Experience spots featuring names from the story, such as Tannzapfentröchni, Adlerschaukel and Höhle, are waiting to be discovered by you and your children. Afterwards, you can enjoy a delicious meal in the Bidmi family restaurant, before taking the gondola and aerial cableways back to the starting point in Meiringen.

Day 2: Boat trip on Brienzersee

Your second day starts in Brienz. You and your family set off on an unforgettable boat trip on the turquoise waters of Brienzersee. The trip to Interlaken Ost takes around an hour and a half. We do recommend, however, that you stop off at one or two spots along the way, such as the Giessbach Falls, where a funicular will take you from the boat dock up to the waterfalls, or Iseltwald, the village known as the pearl of Brienzersee – and for good reason. Depending on how much time you have, you can finish up your second day in Interlaken – or hop on the train to Lauterbrunnen. From this village in the valley of 72 waterfalls, an aerial cableway goes up to the Grütschalp and, from there, a narrow-gauge railway continues on to Mürren. Make sure you sit on the left side of the train in order to fully appreciate the breathtaking view of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau triumvirate. Overall, the journey from Interlaken to Mürren takes just over an hour. After a walk round this idyllic, car-free Alpine village, take the funicular up to Mürren’s very own mountain, the Allmendhubel. You’ll definitely want to linger awhile on the large sun terrace of the Panorama Restaurant. While the kids let off steam in the large Flower Park adventure playground, the parents can enjoy a drink or a bite to eat, before the whole family takes the Allmendhubel funicular back to Mürren, where the programme for today ends. Alternatively, you can make the descent on foot, which takes around 45 minutes.

Day 3: Exploring the Aare Gorge

You set off on the third and final day of your tour from Meiringen. If you're staying in the Haslital, then you simply must try the local speciality: Meringues. Or, even better, make your own egg-whites-and-sugar confection. The children, at least, should give this a go. Every Wednesday morning from July to October, the Frutal bakery in Meiringen hosts meringue-baking sessions for kids. A mere 30-minute walk from the bakery will take you to the Aare Gorge. Over tens of thousands of years, the Aare has carved its course between Innertkirchen and Meiringen through the limestone cliffs. The result is a gorge 1.4 km long, up to 200 m deep, and only 1 to 2 m wide in places. On this 45-minute walk through tunnels, along walkways and over bridges, you will feel the power of nature more than in almost any other place. A memorable experience that will stay with you and your family for a very long time. And so, with this final exciting experience under your belt, your third and final day ends in Innertkirchen.
