Accessible mountain excursions – suggestions for people with reduced mobility

Experience the Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe and the Schilthorn - Piz Gloria, discover largely barrier-free hiking trails and visit an impressive gorge.

This 3-days tour is a tip for people with limited mobility - whether in a wheelchair, with a walking aid or as parents with a pushchair.

Day 1: Without obstacles to the highest railway station in Europe

The first day begins in Grindelwald. The journey to the Jungfraujoch is possible by train via Kleine Scheidegg - there is a low-floor carriage which is easily accessible with a wheelchair or pushchair. However, we recommend travelling in comfort on the Eiger Express via Grindelwald Terminal, where it is easy to get on and off. From the Terminal station, the Eiger Express, the world's most modern tricable gondola, takes you up to the Eiger Glacier in just 15 minutes. Here you change to the Jungfrau Railway. A construction of the century. The route leads through a seven-kilometre tunnel through the Eiger and Mönch to the Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe. At 3454 metres above sea level, the terminus is the highest railway station in Europe. Most of the infrastructure on the Jungfraujoch is wheelchair-accessible, as is the Ice Palace. A delicious fondue or raclette in the village is the perfect end to the day - many restaurants in Grindelwald are wheelchair-accessible.

Day 2: On the trails of James Bond and a tour around the mountain village

The second day of your trip starts in Mürren and is all about the secret agent. In just 15 minutes, you take the aerial cableway from Mürren to the Schilthorn, which was the filming location for the 1969 James Bond classic ‘On Her Majesty's Secret Service’ - and lies at 2970 metres above sea level. Today's 360-degree restaurant served as the base for the villain Blofeld and was given the name Piz-Gloria - which it still bears today. Enjoy a hearty breakfast here with the best views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Afterwards, you can immerse yourself in the making of the film at Spy World, an interactive exhibition about the 007 film. Access is barrier-free in the stations with lifts and changing at the intermediate stations is also easy with wheelchairs and pushchairs. In the summit building, all floors including the restaurant, the large viewing platform, the ‘Spy World’ exhibition and the sanitary facilities are easily accessible. You travel back to Mürren relaxed and enjoy a tour through the car-free mountain village at the end of the day.

Day 3: Refreshing, mystical, precious: the Aare Gorge in Meiringen

The Aare Gorge was formed over thousands of years by the Aare glacier. Quiet splashing, loud rushing, glacial mills, limestone formations. Discover, feel and experience a natural wonder up close - this is possible near Meiringen. Experience and marvel at the power and unspoilt nature of the Aare in the Aare Gorge up close on safe and comfortable paths. The path through the most beautiful parts of the Aare Gorge, from the west entrance to the centre of the gorge, is barrier-free and accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs.
