The Alpine tower stands on the mountain ridge. It is slightly cloudy, but the sun is shining down on the path.
Itinerary

Impressive hikes and local traditions

Regional culture and nature share top billing on this five-day tour, during which you can immerse yourself in the history and culinary tradition of Grindelwald, marvel at the breathtaking landscape and experience Meiringen customs first-hand.

Day 1: An Alpine bird park and an opportunity to sample local products

You first day starts in Grindelwald. Bus no. 121 takes you from the train station to the Grindelwald, Oberer Gletscher stop in 15 minutes. From here, it’s a leisurely 45-minute walk to the Alpenvogelpark (Alpine bird park). This park has nine aviaries, in which mainly native bird species are kept and cared for. Having checked out the local wildlife, you can enjoy homemade and regional delicacies in the Ischboden-Hütte (mountain inn). Afterwards, take the bus back to the village and Grindelwald train station. Just a two-minute walk from there is the Nordwandplatz, where you meet up with a guide for a village tour of Grindelwald’s history and culinary traditions. On it, you’ll hear exciting stories about Grindelwald’s history and origins. As part of the tour, you get to sample fresh local cheese and dairy products, tasty meat and sausage specialities and typical Grindelwald baked goods. The tour ends with a visit to the local history museum, which is also included in the price. That brings the first day of the tour to a close.

Day 2: A hike with heavenly views and a speedy scooter-bike ride

A 30-minute direct trip with Grindelwald Bus from Grindelwald train station takes you right to the heart of the hikers’ paradise of Bussalp. It's a fabulous journey, with wonderful views of the mountain peaks around Grindelwald. Upon arrival, set off on the moderately difficult two-hour hike to Bort. It leads to a sunny location, past Alpine huts and forest clearings. Along the way, stop by the Bergbeizli Rasthysi (mountain inn) for a rest or a spot of lunch. Once in Bort, the pace picks up as you climb aboard a Trottibike scooter. You ride it back down to the valley, to Grindelwald, where your day trip finishes.

Day 3: A narrow glacial gorge and a history-laden waterfall

All good things come in threes. Once again, your day starts at the train station in Grindelwald. A panoramic 75-minute bus journey takes you over the Grosse Scheidegg to the Haslital and the Rosenlaui Glacial Gorge. This narrow gorge below the Rosenlaui Glacier is part of the Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, a secured 573-metre-long path with several tunnels and a 155 m climb has been blasted into the rock. It takes you past mighty waterfalls, romantic grottos and bizarre rock formations. Allow around an hour for your visit. Afterwards, why not enjoy a delicious lunch or quick snack in the historic Hotel Rosenlaui, before boarding the bus once more. It takes 19 minutes to get to Zwirgi, where the Reichenbach Waterfall awaits. Three viewing platforms offer a breathtaking view of the waterfall and the Haslital. This trip is a must for fans of Sherlock Holmes: it was here at this very waterfall where the famous detective battled with his arch-enemy Professor Moriarty in an epic struggle that ended in a plunge into the abyss. Marvel at the rushing stream and the impressive 120-metre-high Reichenbach Waterfall as the nostalgic 24-seater wooden funicular wagon, which is an exact replica of the original, takes you to Meiringen, where your third day ends.

Day 4: Baking meringues and walking through a gorge

Your fourth day starts in Meiringen. Discover tradition and crafts by visiting the handicrafts and hand weaving studio in Meiringen. Speaking of Meiringen, did you know it’s the birthplace of the meringue? For that reason, you absolutely must visit the Frutal bakery, where, every year, they produce more than 30 tonnes of the egg-whites-and-sugar confection. Guided tours are available by appointment and, every Wednesday morning from July to October, you can even make your own meringues there. The day ends with a natural wonder: the Aare Gorge. To get to it, walk for 20 minutes along the Aare river to the Alpbach station, from where it's a short trip on the Zentralbahn to the east entrance of the Aare Gorge in Innertkirchen. Over tens of thousands of years, the Aare has carved its course between Innertkirchen and Meiringen through the limestone cliffs. In doing so, it has created a gorge 1.4 km long, up to 200 m deep, and only 1 to 2 m wide in places. Tip: During July and August, it is illuminated and open until 10 pm. This penultimate day of the tour ends after your visit to the Aare Gorge.

Day 5: A boat trip and a show dairy

For the last day you’re going to need your hiking boots. It kicks off in Meiringen, at the bottom station of the Bergbahnen Meiringen-Hasliberg. Aerial and gondola cableways take you up to the Alpen tower panoramic restaurant, located at 2,250 metres above sea level and boasting an unrivalled 360-degree view, in around 30 minutes. On a good day, you can see 401 mountain peaks from here. But you can’t linger for too long at the Alpen tower, as you still have a moderately difficult, three-and-a-half-hour hike ahead of you. The Horizon Trail takes you to the Engstlenalp via Balmeregghorn and the Tannsee. Along the way, enjoy the unparalleled panoramic view and the colourful flowers. Once you arrive at your destination, you can take a leisurely boat trip on the Engstlensee to recover from your hike. Boats can be hired from the reception of the Hotel Engstenalp. Alternatively, you can visit the Engstlenalp show cheese dairy to discover first-hand how tasty Alpine cheese is made. This brings the final day to a close. The bus trip back to Meiringen takes around one hour.
